About: Bonenkai is a new show for emerging company The Letter Room, associate company of Northern Stage in Newcastle upon Tyne. Inspired by the raucous, seedy underground clubs of the 1920s/1930s this is a story about escape; what it meant then, and what it means now. Bonenkai was shown at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2014.
Outcomes: Bonenkai had a very positive experience in Edinburgh, achieving five star reviews and being short-listed for an award from the Musical Theatre Network (MTN). The company are now in talks with Arts Council to plan a bid for a national small-scale studio tour for Bonenkai in Autumn 2015, with conversations happening with West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Arches, Shoreditch Town Hall, Brighton Festival, The Lowry and Barnsley Civic.
“We have had offers from venues to come and develop new work with them, build new audiences and new creative networks, all of this could not have been done without the support of the KSF.”
