Dinner and Concert with Kevin Spacey and Guests
Saturday September 28th, 2013
Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Washington DC
To fundraise for the Kevin Spacey Foundation and local partner, Only Make Believe and Capital Focus Youth Jazz Band
An intimate cocktail reception in the gardens of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel followed by dinner in the sumptuous ballroom. To accompany the meal, Kevin Spacey sang with local youth jazz band, Capital Focus. He also talked about his mentor, Jack Lemmon, explaining that the ethos of the foundation is based on a Lemmon quote ‘if you have been successful in your chosen career, then it is your obligation to spend a good portion of your time sending the elevator back down’. Performances from Jack’s son Chris Lemmon and young musician Peter Cincotti followed. A silent auction was also conducted throughout the event.
“On Saturday night, as the government faced an imminent shutdown, the actor who plays Underwood—Kevin Spacey—took a break from shooting season two in Baltimore to host his first-ever Washington, D.C., fundraiser for his eponymous foundation. The gala, at the Mandarin Oriental, felt very “House of Cards,” minus the pop-up text messages and ulterior motives.
“Tonight is a chance for me to associate with some of my new Washington friends and my old Washington friends—I’ve done seven plays in Washington over the years so I know this town pretty well,” said Mr. Spacey, as he greeted guests including Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren, pollster Frank Luntz, actor Michael Kelly (who plays Underwood’s chief of staff) and the Republican Majority Whip, Rep. Kevin McCarthy.”
