My People

About This Project

Gwyn Emberton, Choreographer and dancer

About: A new contemporary dance theatre piece for four to five dancers, based on the book ‘My People’. Written in 1915 by controversial Welsh author Caradoc Evans, ‘My People’ is a satirical portrayal of a nonconformist chapel, and its hold over a community at the time. The dance explores the book’s themes of sexual and gender politics and abuse of religious power and hierarchy.

Outcomes: Having received a KSF Grant, the project was also awarded Arts Council Wales funding and did a short tour of Wales with six performers. The future plan is to do a larger, UK wide tour in spring/summer 2015.

“Having the support of the Kevin Spacey Foundation gave me a huge confidence boost to carry out the project.”
