Lulu is one of Western drama’s most problematic figures: she is Pandora, Eve, Helen of Troy—she’s also just a young woman with an innocent appetite for pleasure. So why is it that the men she sleeps with all seem to end up dead? Through a process of “collective deconstruction,” this piece will explore what it is about sexuality, especially female sexuality, that has the ability to terrify people, to make them want to label it, control it, categorize and condemn it.
The Red Light District is a Toronto-based theatre-making company, who rip up plays and put them back together, creating works that explore sexual ethics.

“I am honoured and thrilled to receive the support of the KSF for this project. The recognition, mentorship, and support they bring to the project will be invaluable in creating space for us to experiment and explore as we move Lulu towards completion. So much of this creation process requires having the security and courage to live in uncertainty and vulnerability, and KSF is enabling us to continue on that journey as we move into our next phase of creation.”
