Thousand Plateaus

About This Project

Danah Katz, Choreographer and dancer

About: Thousand Plateaus turns the idea of dance theater-in-the-round inside out. Audience members are seated in the middle of the Hall, while the dancers of Danaka Dance perform around the perimeter of the room.

This work is nurtured by the reflections on the essence of exposure. The core of the work examines how each performer reacts when being asked to start over in a new space, in front of new audience members. This represents the first meeting with the audience: the viewer and critic. Thousand Plateaus is a full-length evening performance, composed not of dances but of “Plateaus.” To a certain extent, these plateaus may be watched independently of one another, in almost any order.

Outcomes: Following a successful production in New York, the creative team are now in talks with venues, unusual performance spaces and festivals around the world to tour Thousand Plateaus.

“The generous assistance of the KSF grant helped us to evolve a completely brand new way of perceiving dance, and truly mark a new journey for each of the artists involved with Danaka Dance.”
